MARC Scholars, Joseph Sanz and Shelby Shankel, awarded for posters at SACNAS and ABRCMS 2016

Joseph Sanz, a second year Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) Scholar, and Shelby Shankel, a first year MARC Scholar, both received poster awards for presenting their research at conferences this Fall. Joseph won a SACNAS Undergraduate Student Poster Presentation Award in Chemistry at the 2016 Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) national meeting last month in Long Beach, California. Joseph won for his second summer research project with the Chenoweth group at University of Pennsylvania titled "Methods to Improve the Jetness and Dispersibility of Industrial Paint by Covalent Modification of Carbon Black". Shelby received a poster award at the 2016 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) national meeting held this month in Tampa, Florida. She won in the chemistry division for her poster titled "Facile Chain End Modification of RAFT Polymers". Joseph and Shelby both work in Prof. Javier Read de Alaniz's group.
